News · Eastview Selects 2020-21 AAA Award Winners

Congrats to Miranda Kerndt and Gabe Mahlen who were selected as this year’s representatives from Eastview in this the Minnesota State High School League State Competition.  Established in 1988, the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award (Triple “A” Award) is sponsored by the Minnesota State High School League. The award is to recognize and honor high school seniors who have excelled in the classroom, on the athletic field, and in the fine arts.  To be eligible for the Academics, Arts, and Athletics Award at Eastview High School a student must be a high school senior, have a strong academic background, have participated in League-sponsored athletics and fine arts activities, comply with the MSHSL’s Student Code of Conduct and be nominated by a staff member.

This year we had a very talented group of candidates reach “finalist” status, which made the selection process this year even more challenging. This is a great testament to the Eastview High Class of 2021 and the number of outstanding student leaders in the class.

Miranda participates in cross country, figure skating and track and field and her athletics highlights include being a two time individual state qualifier, two time Academic All State, two time captain and three time MVP in Cross Cross Country, her Icettes team was the 2019 ISI National Champions, and earned Most improved and is a two time captain in limited track and field seasons thus far due to COVID.  In the Arts she is 2nd Chair flutist in the Wind Ensemble and has earned multiple superior ratings and been selected to several Honor Bands. She carries a 3.949 GPA, is on track to graduate Summa Cum Laude with Honors, is a four time Academic Letter Award Winner and an AP Scholar with Honors all while taking an extremely challenging academic load of Honors and AP classes.  At EVHS he is a member of the  National Honor Society and the Spanish National Honor Society.  Miranda plans on participating in band and competing in cross country and track in college

Gabe was one of the top cross country runners in the state this past fall, recording several of the top times and winning many races throughout the season.  He is a multiple All Conference Award Winner, named the team’s most valuable runner and been named Academic All-State.  In Track and Field he has also earned numerous honors in his first two years of competing including earning all-conference honors, being named the team’s freshman and sophomore of the year and being Academic All-State.  In the arts, Gabe has been a member of the prestigious Eastview Marching Band program for three years that has earned several state level honors.  Individually, he has earned Superior Ratings and been named All State Band.   In addition, Gabe has been a five year participant of the highly successful Robotics team.  Academically, Gabe has a 3.867 GPA taking an all AP/Honors courseload.  He has been an academic letter award recipient three times and has been named an AP Scholar with distinction.  Gabe will attend Michigan Technological University where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science and also plans to compete in Cross Country and Track and Field as well as Robotics.

Congrats again Miranda and Gabe, you will represent us all very well in the next level of competition and congrats again to all of our finalists!

Triple “A” Award recipients are selected by a multi-level process involving the League’s member schools and administrative regions. League officials will announce the four state award recipients (a girl and a boy from both a Class “A” and Class “AA” school)  in March 2021. Each state award recipient will receive a four-year $1,000 scholarship.
