The boys cross country team completed their season at the Section 3AA Championship meet this morning at Valley Wood Golf Course. It was a challenging day for the lightning beginning with cold and blustery conditions that depressed race times and injuries that developed just before race time that resulted in both alternates competing on the day.
Junior Hunter Dunne took the adversity in stride, starting off the section race as he did at conference with an aggressive first mile. Unlike at conference, Dunne found himself with more company throughout the first mile needing to battle with a group of runners for a top finish for the entirety of the 5 kilometer race. After the mile mark the group started to string out. A gap opened between the front of the group and Dunne, but he was able able to hold his position well and maintain a gap on the chase pack that was behind him. As he came down the final 800m of the race he had a top 10 finish secured in his wave coming through the finish in a time of 16:45. This time was good for 10th overall on the day and, in a normal year with a state championship, would have earned him a birth to the state meet, on top of his all-conference performance last week. Congratulations on a successful season.
The other strong performances on the day for the Lightning were from sophomore Jack Hanson who continued his breakout season, running 17:14.6 and junior Max Leach who ran just 3 second off of his personal best today, finishing in 17:35.6. These three runners will help set the standard for the Lightning as they look forward to competing again in 2021.
