The boys cross country team completed their regular season of 5k races today with a dominant victory, capping an undefeated regular season!
On a cool morning, with a flat course, the Lightning made short work of the competition winning with a final score of 20-38 over Farmington HS, just five points off of a perfect score. The Lightning were once again lead by senior Gabe Mahlen who immediately went to the front of the race as has been his pattern throughout the season. Mahlen was dogged by Farmington’s top runner for the first two miles of the race before pulling away over the final mile to win by 30 sec and run the 3rd fastest time in the state this season.
Following behind Mahlen and running away from his teammates to finish 3rd was junior Hunter Dunne who ran a 12 second PR with a time of 16:28.4, the 14th fastest time run by a Lightning runner in school history (and 8th fastest time by a junior). The scoring for the Lightning was rounded out by junior Nate Getman in 4th with a PR time of 16:43.2, senior Sam Setterlund in 5th with a time of 16:55.3, and sophomore Jack Hanson in 7th with a PR time of 17:03.1. The varsity squad was rounded out by senior Grant Piller in 9th with a PR of 17:04.8 and junior Max Leach in 11th with a PR of 17:32.3
31 out of 33 runners for the Lightning ran personal bests today. The most dominant performances on the day came from the runners of waves 2 and 3, each of whom recorded perfect scores against the competition. Freshman Kyle Dungy had the greatest drop in time on the day running over 2 minutes faster than his previous best race. Other big drops in times go to junior John Kronkvist, junior Ryan Brandel, junior Ethan Taylor, sophomore Eli Munson, senior Sean Holmen and freshman Eduard Levin.
The Lightning are next in competition on Saturday Oct. 10th for the South Suburban Conference Championship at Eagan High School.
