The Lightning boys cross country team put in another solid effort to finish 1st in today’s triangular meet against Eagan and Lakeville South. In near perfect weather the Lightning put in a near carbon copy of their performances the past few weeks. Senior Gabe Mahlen immediately went to the lead coming through the mile in 5:01, the two mile in 5:13 and finishing in a new personal best time of 15:55, which now moves him up number 3 on the all-time Eastview rankings list.
Facing some strong competition the Lightning found themselves in a tougher battle positions 2-5 on the team. The chase pack that formed behind Mahlen strung out quickly as a consequence of the fast first mile. Junior Nate Getman was the top runner in this chase pack followed by senior Sam Setterlund, junior Hunter Dunne, senior Grant Piller and sophomore Jack Hanson, all of whom came through the mile 5:15-2:22. Throughout the middle mile Setterlund took over the lead chase duties from Getman closing in on the top runners from the other schools. During this second mile Hanson also moved past Piller to open up a few second lead.
Through the final mile Setterlund was able to break up the top trio from the other schools. Getman and Dunne finished one second apart to round out the top 10 overall, while Piller was able to reclaim his claim to the #5 position on the team and finish in 14th with Hanson close on his heels in 15th in a new PR time of 17:24.9.
Apart from the top 6 from the Lightning, it was another PR extravaganza with another 21 PRs on the day, the largest of which belongs to freshman Edward Levin who lowered his personal best by over a minute. It would be nice to recognize every individual by name, but this write-up would become too long. It was another solid team effort with teammates running in 2’s and 3’s pushing one another throughout the whole race, which allows them to be rewarded for the hard effort and positive work they put in throughout the week.
