The boys cross country team competed on a cool Saturday afternoon against Lakeville North and Apple Valley High Schools today. On a sloping course the Lightning were lead by senior Gabe Mahlen, who upon hearing the gun immediately jumped to the front of the race, running away from the scary sound as fast as possible. He lead the field through the first mile in 4:59 while opening up a 12 second lead on second place. This lead would only grow as he came through the second mile in 10:13 before finishing in 16:04 for his second victory in as many weeks, and the fastest time run on the course throughout 4 different races today.
Junior Nate Getman started strong following Mahlen’s lead coming through the mile in 5:15 and approximately 4th place, he was then followed by fellow junior Hunter Dunne in 5:17 and 8th place. Seniors Sam Setterlund and Grant Piller rounded out the top five for the lightning coming through the mile in 5:22 running in the high teens place wise. This top five continued to work their way through the crowd, consolidating at the front of the race to eventually finish in 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th.
Following them was sophomore Jack Hanson who broke 18 minutes for the first time, completing the course in 17:53.2. Finishing in the final varsity slot today was junior Max Leach in 18:06.7.
Of the 30 finishers for the Lightning today, 21 of them were able to set personal best times. One of these PRs belonged to Senior Logan O’Neil who had a strong performance, running away from his wave of runners and nearly making up a minute gap on the wave ahead of him to finish in 19:04. Not to let his older brother outshine him, freshman Landon O’Neil had the biggest PR on the day, dropping his 5k time by nearly 3 minutes.
