The boys cross country team opened their season yesterday morning with a two mile dual meet. Races this year are conducted in a wave format where athletes begin the race in groups (much like a marathon or ski competitions). In the first wave the Lightning’s top returners competed against the top runners from the Irish of Rosemount. The Lightning were lead by senior Gabe Mahlen who completed the course in a time of 10:15. Behind Mahlen there was a large gap to the numbers 2-5 runners from the Lightning, however, each of these four athletes finished the race in a close group separated by only 15 seconds. Finishing second for the Lightning and 5th overall was junior Hunter Dunne, senior Grant Piller was 6th, junior Nate Getman 8th and senior Sam Setterlund 11th.
Sophomore Ian Young had the biggest jump for the Lightning relative to his freshman year performances. Ian began the race in wave #2, a minute behind the first wave. However, running like a man possessed he was able to make up this minute gap and began passing people from the first wave en route to an excellent time of 12:05.4.
The Lightning next compete on Sept. 4th. For complete results, schedules, and streaming information please visit our schedule/results page
