News · Update on Fall Sports and Athletic Registration 7.20.20

I know many of you have questions regarding school, sports and registration for activities.  Due to the continually evolving COVID-19 situation, I wanted to share a quick update with all of our families involved in athletics.

#1 We are scheduled to learn of recommendations regarding school for this Fall from the Governor, Minnesota Department of Health and Minnesota Department of Education during the week of July 27th.  Our superintendent Mary Kreger and building principal, Bruce Miller, will be in touch with all of the details once they are known.

#2 School districts across the state have been asked to prepare plans for the options of in-person, distance learning or a hybrid model.  Here is a DRAFT of the District 196 plan published by the School Board last week: Learning_Model_for_the_2020_21_School_Year_final  This DRAFT is being reviewed across the district this week with focus groups including students, parents, teachers, paras, clerical and support staff from each building in the district.  The 196 School Board will reconvene to make final recommendations after the announcement from state officials.

#3 Fall sports and a decision about return to participation is governed by the Minnesota State High School League.  AD’s from across the state have been meeting weekly throughout the summer discussing a number of different scenarios.  Recently, a statewide task force has been set-up to make recommendations to the Board of Directors.  As of now, the intention of the MSHSL Board is to move forward with Fall Sports as scheduled for the August 17 start date, but that is by no means a final decision and also requires guidance and approval from state officials.  The MSHSL recommendation for Fall Sports is expected to be announced at their August 4th Board Meeting.

#4 Once a final decision has been made about Fall Sports we will move forward with opening registration.  With Fee Pay no longer an online payment solution as the company will stop doing business as of the end of this month, the district has selected a new vendor, My Payments Plus by Horizon, for activity registration.  More info will be sent out with details of how to sign-up AFTER we know for sure we will indeed be having Fall Sports.  We will only be registering for Fall Sports we know are for sure happening and will hold off on Winter and Spring Sports at a later date.

#5 One thing that can be taken care of prior to registering is turning in an updated physical if one is needed.  Here is a link to the physical form for this year: SPORTS QUALIFYING PHYSICAL EXAMINATION 20.21  Our Sports Medicine Provider, Twin Cities Orthopedics, is offering FREE Physicals this fall.  Click here for all of the details and signups:  TCOmn.com/SportsPhysicals.

In the meantime, summer camps through District 196 Community are continuing at this time.  We thank all of you for your continued flexibility and patience and hope you are all continuing to stay healthy and safe during these challenging times.  We will be back in touch with updates as they become available.  THANKS!
