The boys track team sent two relays and an individual to the state meet held this weekend, and all athletes came home with all-state honors. Leading the way was junior AJ Green who defended his state title in the 800m with a winning time of 1:49.93, just three tenths of a second off of the state meet record. AJ ran a controlled first two hundred leading the field through the 200 in 26/27 seconds. Over the next 200m he began to put a gap on the field, coming through the 400m in 54.8. AJ continued to press on the pedal stretching his lead over the course of the last lap to win by almost 6 seconds.
AJ was also the anchor of Eastview’s 4x400m relay team made up of fellow juniors Angelo Paulucci, Kole Peterson and Sam Morgenstern. Paulucci lead the team off with 51.7 sec split. Peterson took the baton second running a competitive leg bringing the Lightning from 8th to 5th with a split of 51.8. Third up was Morgenstern who kept the Lightning in striking distance for Green with a 51.3 split. Green took the baton and confidently ran down the field, running the fastest 400m split of the day in 47.9 seconds to move the Lightning into 4th place.
To start the day off was the 4x800m relay made up of sophomores Colby Rubischko, Gabe Mahlen, Sam Morgenstern and senior Sam Erickson. Rubischko lead the Lightning off by placing himself at the back of the field and following the pack through an opening leg of 2:00.7. Rubischko handed off to Mahlen who found himself isolated from the field after the hand off. Nonetheless Mahlen ran a solid pace working to close the gap on the group ahead of him. Mahlen’s time of 1:59.2 was two seconds better than he ran at the section meet. Mahlen then passed off to Erickson who found himself back in the chase group. Erickson put in a 2:04.1 leg to hand off to Morgenstern, who had a 5 second gap to the next closest team ahead (and 9 second lead on the next team behind). After an aggressive first 200m Morgenstern settled and helped Eastview to a season’s best time of 8:01.42 with his 1:57.2 anchor leg. The time earned the runners all-state recognition with a 9th place finish, just a half second ahead of 10th place.
AJ Green will continue to compete the first few weeks of summer. Please follow us on twitter (@evhsxctf) for updates.
