Boys Varsity Cross Country · Boys V Cross Country 3rd, JV 2nd at Mayo Invite

Congratulations to the boys’ varsity cross country team on their third place finish and the boys junior varsity cross country team on their second place finish at today’s Mayo Invite. The boys JV team was lead by junior Ian Kenney who finished in second place overall. Ian started the race in a conservative fashion behind several of his teammates through the first mile of the race. He steadily moved forward over the next mile passing teammates and competitors alike to move into second place. Over the final mile he tried valiantly to track down the lead runner, opening a sizeable lead over third place, but in the end came up a few seconds short for second place. Behind Ian was senior Sam Erickson who finished in 5th place overall streaking past a pack of Stillwater Ponies over the last 1,000m of the race. Right behind this pack came junior Brendan Wilhelm who was followed by senior Matt Morrison and freshman Nate Getman. Getman and fellow freshman Hunter Dunne have been the top two 9th grade finishers at every meet so far this season. Both of these runners moved up steadily throughout the race, improving their position with each passing tick of the clock.

In the varsity race the Lightning continued to be led by junior AJ Green who finished 2nd overall with a  time of 16:21.6. Green made a strong move from the 2k to the 3k passing several runners to put himself in the top 5. From 3k to 4k he moved into 2nd place which he maintained throughout the race. Junior Sam Morgenstern got caught in “no man’s land” early in the race before closing in on the back of the pack AJ had just passed through to put himself into the top 10. With a strong kick Morgenstern was able to finish 8th overall. The pack of seniors Jesse Laursen, Ben Danner and sophomores Colby Rubischko and Sam Setterlund ran together over the first mile of the race before Laursen, Danner, and Setterlund began to pull away. Just as he did last week, Laursen led the charge consistently moving up throughout the race while pulling his teammates along with. This week Setterlund got the better of Danner finishing 4th on the team while Danner was 5th.
