Congratulations to sophomore AJ Green on his 7th place finish at the New Balance Outdoor National meet Sunday in Greensboro, NC. After the sacrifice of several water bottles to stave off the 95 degree heat, and an hour delay, AJ Green took to the track in his heat of the 800m.
The race opened at a conservative pace for the first 100m as the field waited to see who would take the lead. As the pack sorted itself AJ found himself in approximately 6th place. He started to move up on the backstretch, working himself up to 3rd by the 200m, opening with a 27. Running on the outside of lane one around the curve he started to challenge the leaders to pick up pace over the next 200m, coming through the 400 in a 55. Recognizing the slow pace AJ put on his patented acceleration to take over the race with 300m to go. The field tried to stick with him over the next 200m, but with 100m to go AJ proved to be the strongest athlete in the field opening up a 15-20 m lead over the final 100m of the race to finish in 1st.
His time of 1:52.45 was the fastest time run in the first two sections of the race. He had to wait until the final section ran 3 hours later to see his official place. The final heat of the day went out more aggressively, however, AJ’s performance was still faster than 2 athletes in this final section allowing him to move up to 7th place overall, one spot away from a podium finish.
Congratulations on a successful track season that saw AJ set a school record, a conference record, win a state title, run the #3 fastest time by a sophomore in state history, finish 2018 as the #2 sophomore in the nation, and #7 at the national outdoor meet.
