Congratulations to the boys cross country team as they finished in first place at today’s Richard Mitchell Invitational in La Crosse, Wisconsin. After enduring two weeks of meets with temperatures soaring into the mid 90’s with a high dew point, today was a welcome respite on a beautiful afternoon running between the bluffs in La Crosse.
Starting the day strongly for the Lightning in the JV race were senior James Loomis and junior Ben Danner who paired up early in the race to challenge the teams from Wisconsin. Although some runners from Wisconsin thought they could hold off the Lightning storm, it wasn’t long before James and Ben found themselves in the lead. They continued to push one another throughout the entire race, trading places, to finish in new PR times. Ben took first overall in 18:11.9 while James was second in 18:12.8. Following behind these two were junior Sam Erickson who finished in 3rd overall, while freshman Grant Piller took 4th in a new PR time of 18:39.1. These two steadily moved up throughout the race, picking off runners from other teams until by the 4k mark they were alone. Unfortunately, for the second year in a row, a Wisconsin runner broke up a perfect score by the Lightning, but finishing sixth was junior Jesse Laursen with a new PR. He was closely followed by freshmen Gabe Chambers and Colby Rubischko who rounded out Eastview’s top seven by finishing 7th and 8th overall. There were 22 PRs out of 35 racers in today’s competition, too many to all recognize here, but a very hearty congratulations to all of today’s JV competitors.
In the varsity race the Lightning began a controlled race following the pace set by a pair of Aquinas and a pair of La Crosse Central runners. Seniors Bryant Ruff and Michael Brennan were following at the back of this group through the first 3k. At this point the race started to split up and Bryant began to make his way through the pack to eventually finish in 5th place overall. Brennan held his position finish in 7th. Sophomore Sam Morgenstern began the race off of freshman teammate Gabe Mahlen by a few seconds, and throughout the race was trying to run down his teammate who had a strong return to the varsity line-up after sitting out with an injury. Gabe ran a solid race in isolation without competition around for 4900 meters of the race, and in the last 100m teammate Morgenstern caught Mahlen to finish in 9th place to Mahlen’s 10th, both of whom ran PR times. The varsity top seven was rounded out by Jackson Lee in 14th place while junior Nick Dolan was 15th, and in his first varsity race for the team sophomore Brendan Wilhelm and a 1 min 6 second PR to finish in 20th place overall. The team finished in first place.
