Boys Junior Varsity Cross Country, Boys Varsity Cross Country · Boys Cross Country Mayo Invite Recap

The boys cross country competed on a hot and humid afternoon in Rochester today.  Starting the day off was the boys JV team who finished third overall.  They were lead by junior Sam Erickson who ran a strong and consistent race to finish 9th overall. Closely following him was senior James Loomis who finished in 11th, and freshmen Gabe Chambers and Grant Piller who finished 14th and 16th respectively.  The trio of Sam, James, and Grant were part of a large group of Eastview runners who ran a smart race together.  The group started together towards the middle of the throng of runners, and from the 1k through the 3k marks steadily moved up as one team until they were all between 20th and 30th place.  Over the final kilometer they began to split up as Sam, James and Grant were able to pull away from their teammates.  While these three were part of a large pack of Eastview runners, Chambers had started more conservatively and consistently worked himself into the top 15 runners throughout the entirety of the race. Rounding out the top seven for the Lightning were sophomore Brendan Wilhelm and junior Jesse Laursen.  Having big PRs in the JV race were sophomore Elijah Boots, junior Sebastian Schrader, Piller, and sophomore Aidan Osborne.

In the varsity race the Lightning followed a very similar plan as the JV group.  With a conservative start, the team was able to stick together as tighter groups than in previous races.  They were lead by senior Bryant Ruff who finished in 4th place overall, edging out his competition and finishing in the front of a group of 5 athletes.  Throughout the race he steadily caught athletes who had gone out harder than him and were not able to hold the pace. Behind the trail that Ruff was blazing was a trio of runners in freshman Gabe Mahlen, sophomore Sam Morgenstern, and senior Michael Brennan.  They stayed withing 20 seconds of Ruff through 3k, at which point they began to race more aggressively. Gabe Mahlen was able to open up a slight lead on his teammates, but was forced to step off the course when he rolled his ankle. Morgenstern took up the reigns then, and on a hot humid day continued his 2017 successes with another PR in 17:52. Brennan finished his first race of the season in 18:37.  A second trio of Eastview runners in senior Jackson Lee, and juniors Nick Dolan and Ben Danner followed the previous group through 3k as well.  The entire team looked strong through this point when they began to race more aggressively the last mile. It was senior Jackson Lee who took the lead and finished in the front of this group in 18:22 to take third on the team.  Danner and Dolan both followed in 18:30.
