The boys cross country team competed today at the Rovn/Bauman Invite at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. The day got off to an exciting start as the bus to the meet got caught in a street race with several of the worlds’ finest automobiles. It was a close battle, where several of the cars were clearly intimidated by the size of the bus, and through pure determination (and intimidation), the bus took the day as all the super cars turned off of 494.
Not to be outdone by the bus, the boys cross country team followed up the bus’s performance with a strong showing of their own. Beginning the day strong for the Lightning in the JV race was Garrison Puit who after the 1k mark in the race made a strong push to run in the top ten for the next 3k. As the finish line loomed Garrison found himself battling with a pack of 15 runners and he showed great perseverance to beat them out and finish the race in 10th place in a new PR time! One of the people Garrison was competing with was freshman Sam Setterlund who ran a consistent race and caught up to Garrison at the finish for a strong 11th place finish in a new PR of 18:35. Freshman Grant Piller ran a new personal best of 19:26, while the largest improvement of the JV race went to sophomore Brendan Wilhelm with of time 19:25. The JV squad finished in 4th place.
In the varsity race the Lightning were lead by senior Bryant Ruff who continued his PR streak by finishing in a time of 16:43.8, which ranks him 5th in Eastview history on the Gale Woods course. Finishing second on the team for the second week in a row was freshman Gabe Mahlen who broke 18:00 minutes for the first time, finishing in 17:47, the 8th fastest time by a freshmen in school history. Throughout the race Gabe was competing with sophomore teammate Sam Morgenstern, and was just able to edge Sam out over the last 1k, while Sam battled to a new PR by also breaking 18:00 minute mark and finishing in 17:56.5. Rounding out the top 7 for the Lightning were senior Jackson Lee (18:09), and the junior trio of Nick Dolan, Ben Danner, and Sam Erickson, all of whom ran PRs on the day.
The Lightning are next in competition on Thursday, Sept 14 in Rochester at the Mayo invite.
