Game Recap

Friday evening, the Eastview girls lacrosse team won their Section 6 Quarterfinal game against Bloomington Jefferson 11 to 9. The warm evening saw the Lightning get the scoring started less than four minutes into the game. Mary Keating picked up a ground ball from a Jefferson turn-over and sliced her way past the defense from the lefft wing to take the 1 to 0 lead. The Jaguars would tie the score at 1 apiece a little less than five minutes later. Then Bloomington would grab the 2 to 1 lead over the Lightning with 13:14 left in the first half. Holly Sodomka would finish on a a nice dodge she started from behind the Jefferson net to tie the score 2 to 2 with 10:55 left in the half. Then less than a minute later Chloe Benadum would cut from the top of 12 meter arc and Maddy Doyle would hit her in stride with the pass that Benadum netted to give the Lightning the 3 to 2 lead. The two teams defenses would tighten over the next five minutes. Then with less than five minutes to play in the first half a flurry of goals from the two teams would occur. First, Jefferson would score back-to-back goals to take a 4 to 3 lead over Eastview with 2:45 left in the half. Kayla Doyle would sprint past the Jaguar defense in transition and score with 30 seconds left in the half to tie the score at 4 to 4. Jefferson would take the lead back with less than a second left on the clock in the first half. The Lightning would enter halftime trailing 4 to 5. The second half would see Eastview come out strong with a string of four straight goals. Keating would net a goal after driving to the net from the top of the 12 meter arc 40 seconds into the half to tie the score at 5 to 5. Then 30 seconds later Allie Tuccitto would cut from her low attack position and Keating found her with a nice feed pass, taking the 6 to 5 lead. Sodomka would get a free-position shot that she netted with 22:10 left in the game to bring the Lightning lead to 7 to 5. Then just 30 seconds later Keating would slice her way through the Jaguar defense to put Eastview ahead 8 to 5. Jefferson would call a timeout and regroup. The Jaguars would complete their own run of three goals over the course of the next nine minutes of the game tying the game at 8 to 8. The Lightning would answer back, scoring the next two goals of the game. The first came with 11:02 left in the game, when Tuccitto attacked with a dodge she initiated from behind the net. Then with 7:19 left in the game she gave the Lightning the two goal lead when she earned and buried a free-position shot. Eastview then went into their possession controlling offense. With Jefferson needing to press for a turnover, Steffi Frederickson darted behind the Jaguar defense where Ally Ford found her with a pass. Frederickson netted her shot and gave the Lightning an 11 to 8 lead with 4:30 left on the clock. Jefferson would answer back less than a minute later to cut the Eastview lead to 11 to 9. But, the Lightning ball control in the last minutes of the game preserved the victory. Brielle Walter made some nice saves throughout the game to earn the win in net for the Lightning. Marissa Munos was dominant in the draw circle, with Eastview controlling a majority of the game’s draws. The Lightning defense of Kaitlyn Pellicci, Annemarie O’Keefe, Nicole Swanson and Kayli Kjos also did a nice job slowing the potent Jaguar attack. The Lightning next play in the Section 6 semi-final game against Prior Lake at Kuehlamn Stadium in the Edina Community Center Tuesday at 5 PM.
