The Eastview Lightning will be well represented at the Class AA Boys State Tennis Tournament next week following an exciting day of action Tuesday at Baseline Tennis Center. Gavin Young cruised to the 6AA Section Championship with two straight set wins over opponents from Edina. Gavin came into the tournament as the top seed and lived up to expectations as he cruised through four matches without dropping a set.
The path to State for the doubles team of Nisal Liyanage and Sourabh Terakanambi was more complicated, but perhaps more entertaining. Sourabh and Nisal started their day with one of the best matches of the season against Bloomington Jefferson. After pulling out a close first set in a tiebreaker, the Lightning dropped the second only to rally to take the third by erasing a 0-3 deficit. Following a loss in the championship match to a tough team from Benilde-St. Margaret, the boys were forced to endure a lengthy delay only to learn that they would need to play a true second match against a team from Edina for a place in the state tournament. Despite the wait Eastview took control from the beginning and pulled away for a 6-1 6-2 win.
The State Tournament will begin Thursday, June 8 at 8:00 AM inside Baseline Tennis Center in Minneapolis.
